FathersLikeThat: Lekwa Udensi Johnson
During my growing up years, it seemed the only reasonable, meaningful interest or dream to have was to become a doctor, a lawyer or an engineer. If you nursed any other ambition, you were unserious. Entering Ezeoma’s room and seeing a massive drum set confirmed to me that times have changed and so has parenting.
Lekwa seemed to be telling his son, ‘if that’s where your interest lies, then go for it.’ And the little man not only wants to play the drums, he wants to play the piano and he wants to play football too. And his father is up to the task. Even if he is not a pro at all these, to his son he is the best guide, instructor, teacher and coach. And that’s what fathers truly are.
There may be many unpleasant tales about men out there but it doesn’t change the fact that we still have fathers who put the work in. They prod their own on, they listen and encourage their diverse passions and interests. LU is a #FatherLikeThat.
Certain things build confidence in a child, they implant the can-do spirit that makes it hard for any negativity to stay. And when this confidence comes from your father’s noble efforts, you are able to raise your head high, walk tall with a strong belief that you can take the world.
Ezeoma exudes confidence, you need to meet him. He carries himself with that self-assurance that impossible is nothing. It’s pretty much obvious, he has a #FatherLikeThat.
We don’t say it often. We sometimes take it for granted too. But, this day we thank you for all that you do, for all that you are and for just being there through thick and thin. We thank you for playing your role in ensuring the next generation is safe and sane. Thank you for being a #FatherLikeThat.
Thank you, LU.
